Music Program

Kid City’s music program welcomes students of all musical abilities to a creative space where youth are empowered to create music to share with their community. Students may participate in individual and group lessons, jam bands, and ensembles. Kid City also offers opportunities for musically minded students to learn about careers in the arts, and to practice event production and perform at events throughout the year.

Music Lessons

Kid City offers music lessons -- guitar, bass, piano, drums, saxophone, flute, trumpet, violin, voice, and more -- free of charge to high school and college students in our community. Instruments are available to lend to students when possible. Staff and volunteer instructors emphasize a student-led curriculum, adapting course material to match the students' interest while imparting universal musical skills and knowledge. Each semester, students are invited to perform at open-mic nights and other performance events.

Student-led Ensembles

At the start of each semester, Kid City facilitates the formation of different ensembles tailored to the experience level of each student. Many of these ensembles are student-led and perform a variety of contemporary styles including rock, jazz, Latin and pop. Led by Music Program Coordinator Matthew Proft and Assistant Music Coordinator Alvaro Cuellar, ensembles meet weekly to prepare for upcoming performances.

Music & Arts Workshops

Kid City strives to include all of its participants in music & arts programming. Once a semester, staff host workshops inclusive of non-music students to remind them that art is about being able to express yourself freely and outside the confines of traditional standards for art. We hope to immerse students in artistic staples that exist within the city - like the Grammy Museum just down the block from Kid City!
