Ringing in the 10th year anniversary of Splash of LA could not have been imagined being celebrated & organized to fit into the size of a computer screen. #Splashathome took on a name more than the image of water balloons being thrown in the backyard to keep cool during the summer heat, but also as a hashtag to keep the connection going through social media and Zoom. Reimagining Splash inspired the idea of Splash-in-a-bag: a reusable bag that included a DIY gardening kit, art supplies, face masks, snacks, and water balloons and toys. For Angelita Sanchez, this year’s Splash at Home coordinator, seeing Kid City participants wear their masks while picking up their bags was a reminder that, even in the hardest of situations, one’s community will be for support.
While missing the abundance of helping hands this year, #Splashathome was all hands on deck from each staff member and a small yet dedicated group of volunteers and interns. We honored the musical performances and activities of our in person event, and adapted to fit musical expression through an engaging livestream. Unlike other years, we rallied excitement through raffle prizes, where friends and family connected with us from all over the US.
